International Workshop on “Mist – Lining – An Alternative Method for the Structural Repair of Canvas Paintings”

We are pleased to inform you about our next International Workshop on “Mist – Lining – An Alternative Method for the Structural Repair of Canvas Paintings” by Jos van Och, Senior Conservator Paintings and Head Conservation Studio at SRAL and Bianca Van Velzen, Senior Conservator Paintings, Painted Objects and Gilt Leather at SRAL (Maastricht – Nederland).

SRAL is a leading institute specialized in the conservation and restoration of paintings, sculptures, contemporary artworks, historic interiors and gilt leather. SRAL provides an integrated approach to conservation issues through research, consultancy and education.

TARGET AUDIENCE
The course aims at restorers and professionals assisted by an interpreter for the whole course.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES
The training initiative aims to offer participants the knowledge and skills to apply the “mist-lining” technique, the procedure developed by the teachers for cold lining with spray application of the adhesive.

SCHEDULE
The course starts on  Thursday Sept. 12, 2019 at 9 am and ends at 6 pm on Saturday Sept. 14, 2019 (morning lessons 9 am to 1 pm and 2 to 6 pm in the afternoon).In case of a number of requests exceeding the availability, a second module will be activated always in September, 19 to 21, 2019.

COSTS AND TERM OF PAYMENTS
The participation fee includes also the educational material.
Participation fee: €. 400,00 (+ 22% VAT if due)
Fees must be paid upon confirmation of the course which will be e-mailed to participants
On the basis of expressions of interest received by the deadline, the organizing Commission will draw up, according to its own unquestionable judgment, a ranking of admitted to the workshop.

Terms of payment will be subsequently emailed to participants.

COURSE VENUE
The course is held at the European Centre for Heritage Crafts and Professions in Villa Fabris, Via Trieste, 43, 36016 Thiene, Italy. For those who may be interested, the Centre offers an accommodation service.

DEADLINE FOR ADMISSION
Expressions of interest must be notified by email to the following address: centroeuropeo@villafabris.eu no later than Wednesday, July  31, 2019. It will be subsequently sent to interested parties an email confirming the beginning of the workshop.

Morning
– short presentation explaining various examples/case studies of implemented Mist Linings.
– discussions about different sprayed test canvases.
Afternoon
– explanation about various low-pressure envelope systemsin compared to low-pressureand vacuum tables.
– explanation about selection of canvases, textiles, interleafs and other materials and related preparing methods
– preparation of various canvasses and textiles as lining canvas
Friday, September 13
Morning
– explanation about various acrylic dispersion glues available
– preparing glue for spraying
– demonstration of spraying methods and practical spray testscarried out by individual participants
Afternoon
– continuing spray tests
– explanation about the design of and constructing a low-pressure envelope system
Saturday, September 14
Morning
– continuing the construction and testing of low-pressure envelope system
– discussion about solvent choices for glue regeneration and the consequences involved for the objects
– explanation about the use of chosen solvent
Afternoon
– lining execution with low-pressure envelope system and prepared materials
– discussion
– closure programme
